Benedictine and Franciscan Monks: Forgotten Inventors

Usually, when we think of religious orders, these things come to mind: a cloister, an abbey, a library, prayer in solitude, detachment from the world… All this in the cradle of a period defined as "dark" by historiography up to Romanticism: the Middle Ages . In this period the monks - especially the Benedictines of the various orders - were the custodians of Judeo-Christian but also classical culture, since thanks to their patient and meticulous transcriptions as scribes we have received almost all of the Greek and Latin works which we study today. Today we are grateful to them first of all for this.   However, many do not know that many products - material and immaterial - that we consume and use every day, come from monks who, using their ingenuity nourished by a profound spirituality, invented them due to practical necessities.    Personally, I find it amazing!    Let's begin…   The heavy plow   Plows were a primary agri...

Welcome to the Circus!

“Welcome to the Amazing Digital Circus! My name is Caine! I’m your ring master and I’m here to show you the most jaw-dropping, heart-stopping, mind-bending paraphernalia you’ve ever laid your eyes upon!”

Everyone in the Internet seems to be going crazy over an upcoming show called The Amazing Digital Circus, but what is it exactly?

The Amazing Digital Circus is a computer-animated surreal black comedy and horror web series produced by Glitch Productions. It became extremely popular online as soon as the pilot was released on YouTube on October 13th. This series tells the story of six strangers that, for unknown circumstances, are trapped in a virtual world with no way of escape. We viewers get introduced to this from the point of view of Pomni, the main character, a girl that gets trapped in the Circus and, like everyone else, doesn’t remember how she got there.

The main characters

POMNI
The main character, she is dressed as a jester with brown hair and blue and red eyes. She seems very anxious, and, for a good part of the pilot, she even convinced herself if was all just a dream.

JAX
One of the other humans trapped with Pomni, he’s a purple tall bunny, sarcastic, apathetic and very prone to pranks.

RAGATHA
An optimistic doll-like girl, that looks happy even when getting hurt

CAINE
He’s the ringleader, whose head is replaced by floating teeth with eyeballs in it. He’s charismatic, well-mannered, and constantly tries to keep the others busy with activities to distract them from the thoughts of escaping. He’s always paired with Bubble, his fellow assistant, an AI-shaped bubble.

Of course, there are many other characters, like Kingler, Kaufmo, Zooble and Gangle!

Escaping the virtual reality looks impossible, since every door in the big, colourful circus leads to other rooms, but never an exit. Even Caine, the AI that works as a presenter, describes their entire new world divided in 3 main zones: the tent, the grounds and the void (something he wouldn’t even try to explore). But some people there seem to continuously rant about an exit door they keep seeing in random places with the corner of their eyes, driving them to madness and causing them to “abstract”. As it happened to Kaufmo before, Pomni made her appearance. But is the exit real? Or only a product of hallucinations? That’s up to Pomni and the others to find out!

Why is this show so popular?

This show became popular for many reasons, like the creative and all different characters’ looks and personalities, the colourful setting full of intriguing rooms and objects, and the weird and chaotic mood of mystery that keeps the viewer hooked immediately from the start.

Here’s the link to the pilot!

Aren’t We All Poor Things?

"Poor Things!", released in Italian theatres on January 25 2024, is a film by director Yorgos Lanthimos that presents itself as a startling and thought-provoking work. Through grotesque atmospheres and surreal hues, the film revisits the myth of Frankenstein in a modern key, focusing on the female figure of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone). Bella, an emancipated woman with a sexuality that was free for her time, is brought back to life by the scientist God (Mark Ruffalo) after a suicide attempt. However, her brain is replaced with that of the foetus she was carrying, creating a hybrid and unique creature.   Like Frankenstein's monster, Bella finds herself catapulted into a world that does not understand or fear her. Her childlike innocence clashes with the cruelty and hypocrisy of Victorian society, leading her to have grotesque and tragicomic experiences. Lanthimos, through the figure of Bella, explores deep and universal themes: diversity, the search for a place in the world...

The first woman war reporter: Nellie Bly

Who was Nellie Bly Nellie Bly? One of the most extraordinary and courageous reporters of all time, a pioneer of investigative journalism: "I never wrote a word that did not come from my heart. I will never do it." Heart, but also the head. That’s how Nellie Bly became the first investigative journalist in history. She died on January 27, 102 years ago, and was born at a time when society's consideration of women did not go beyond the contours of the role of the angel of the hearth. Born Elisabeth Jane Cochran on May 5, 1864, she was the first undercover journalist. She began her career at the age of 20 when she sent a letter of protest to the editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch about an article in the newspaper claiming that women are only suitable for domestic work. She adopted the pseudonym with which she is famous today and began to write mainly about social issues, making activism the ultimate goal of her profession. She denounced cases of child exploitation,...
