8 Mile was named one of the best
movies of 2002 by several publications, an American drama film written by Scott
Silver, starring the famous American rapper Eminem, Mekhi Phifer, Brittany
Murphy, Michael Shannon, and Kim Basinger.
The Plot
The movie contains
autobiographical elements from Eminem's life. The rapper plays Jimmy Smith, a
white guy from a poor family in north Detroit with his mother and little
sister, who wants a future as a rapper while working in a car factory during
the day. One day, Jimmy goes to a rap battle at a local venue, The Shelter, but
chokes during the battle and leaves the stage, humiliated. Things improve when
he meets Alex, an aspiring model headed for New York, and Jimmy's friendship
with Wink, a radio DJ with ties to a record label promoter, fades when Jimmy
discovers that Wink does promotional work for Jimmy's rival band, "Leaders
of the Free World."
Jimmy and his friends get into a
violent brawl with this gang, but the fight is interrupted by his friend
Cheddar Bob, who accidentally shoots himself in the legs but thankfully
survives after being rushed to the hospital. Jimmy proves his talent by
defending one of his gay co-workers from another co-worker of his who was
insulting him, and Alex sees him, remaining impressed with it. Wink arranges
for Jimmy a meeting with producers at a recording studio, but when he arrives,
he discovers Wink and Alex making out and fights. Jimmy becomes enraged and
attacks Wink, but Alex tries to stop them. After this, Wink and The Free World
assault Jimmy outside his trailer. The gang's leader holds Jimmy at gunpoint
and threatens him, but Wink calms him down. After the group has left Jimmy
alone, his mother comes back home with enough money to avoid eviction after
winning in a bingo tournament.
Jimmy's Battle
Jimmy's battle host, Future,
encourages him to seek vengeance by competing in the next rap battle against
the Leaders of The Free World, and he agrees. But his boss agrees to give Jimmy
some late-night shifts, which are covered by Paul after convincing him not to
compete. Jimmy competes against one of the Free World crew members in each
round of the rap battle. After defeating Lotto and Lyckety-Splyt in the first
two rounds, he faces the leader, Papa Doc, and ultimately wins, pointing out
his hard life and then exposing that Papa Doc, despite posing as a thug, has
instead a privileged and stable life. Papa Doc hands the microphone back to
Future, embarrassed, because he has nothing to say in rebuttal.
Jimmy's Victory
Jimmy is offered a job co-hosting
battles at The Shelter after some congratulations by Alex, but Jimmy declines,
stating that he must go his own way, and returns to work.
My Final Thoughts
I LOVED this movie. Even though,
at first, I thought it wasn't my favourite genre, I ended up enjoying it a lot!
This movie shows such a powerful and emotional story that illustrates how
someone can overcome hardships and rise above adversity. There are real-life
lessons we can all take away from this movie because the message of this film
is that we can turn even our biggest flaws into strengths and reach success.
Like Jimmy's struggles and his journey to becoming a rap battle champion, he
overcomes a lot of obstacles and challenges, and in the end, he wins the final
rap battle against his biggest rival but keeps his ideals straight by wanting
to follow his own way, not the others they are offered to him.
